FTL Log Entry 19

Captain's Log, Day 19:

After yesterday, we all needed a lucky break.  I'm just glad the crew didn't have to hear what was going on while we waited for the engines to charge.  The noises.  Dear god, the noises.

We came across another seemingly empty sector.  A loud beep split the silence as we were hailed by a small shuttle asking for our assistance.  Apparently, they were under attack by pirates.  We, of course, took the opportunity to do a good deed, hoping to make up for our past.

The pirate ship appeared to be a retrofitted Rebel fighter.  Scans of the ship revealed that they only had a small burst laser and a beam weapon.  So long as Pipaluk could keep our shields up, we weren't in too much danger.  Bjorn powered the weapons while Aisha and I prepared to take evasive action.

We fired a missile at their shields, followed quickly by a laser burst at their weapons.  The missile took out their shield generator, and appeared to breach their hull, while our laser burst took out half of their weapon systems.  They responded in kind, their beam was absorbed by our shield, but their entire burst volley landed - one burst absorbed, the other two landing in the rear airlock starting a fire.  I vented the compartment to space before the fire could spread to the engine room, and Bjorn kept firing on their weapons.  The next volley completely disabled them, so it was only a matter of time until this was over.  They managed to repair their shields just as the final burst hit their ship, blasting them into space debris.

We recovered a fuel cell, a drone, and 29 scrap from the wreckage, and hailed the civilian ship.  It was at that point we realized the civilians had fled.  A wise decision on their part.  We celebrated this small victory, and prepared to jump - we would be backtracking a little, as we picked up the signal of another market nearby.  This time, however, we had enough scrap for SOMETHING useful - or so we hoped.

I'm starting to worry about myself as well...all the shit we've seen, all the terrible luck we've had, I feel like I'm cracking up.  It worries me how much I enjoyed blowing up those pirates.  While pirates are a plague on the peaceful space-faring people, is it really my place to cast down judgement?  Be judge, jury, and executioner?  Or am I just going mad while trying to avenge all the wrongs I see?
